Day 13: Out Of Onions

Captain’s Log; Day 13. I’m sad to report, the onion bin is dry. We haven’t been to town, or to the dumpster for that matter, in 13 days.

The fresh produce is no longer fresh. The potatoes haven’t started to root yet, nor has the milk soured. So, for now, we’re OK. We’re getting creative with what to dollop on the taters. Next meal adventure involves Skyline Chili on top of the spud. I’ll letcha know how that goes.

I do still miss the sunshine, my kids and a paycheck. But other than that, I’ve got what I need. We stocked up on wine last trip to Wally. The check out girl commented, “Oh, are we having a party?” Um, no. We like wine. No invitation for her.

We’re accumulating quite the snowfall today, 6.5 inches at last measurement. My trek to the mailbox was not only beautiful and serene, it was also quite a workout. Brewskie was especially frisky (he’d chew a hole in my boot if I lingered too long). Must be that 1/2 Siberian Husky in him. The Shepherd 1/2 explains why he’s the only one allowed to walk within 12 inches of me.

Yep, that’s me all bundled up for our mail retrieval excursion. I had so many layers on, I was sweating bullets by the time I got back home. I’m thankful I finally remembered to wear my new snow bibs. Like a girl, I asked my husband, “Do these make me look fat”. He assured me they showed off my hourglass figure (SMART, smart man, that one!). I borrowed his wood cutting goggles. Surely they’ve invented something that doesn’t fog up so frequently. Longing for a light-weight welders helmet with a flip-up front face shield.

Later this afternoon I asked Lance if he thought having a big doghouse on the porch would deter burglars. He said, “We can just get a sign, BEWARE OF DOG”. I replied, ‘But that won’t keep the snow off of Brewskie”. I don’t really want a dog house on our porch. He’s not our dog. I wonder if his owner knows he’s found a new daytime family. Do dogs go through rebellious teen times? Maybe being with us is the equivalent of running away from home. If that’s the case, he’s slowly moving his bone collection here. There are 3 large limb bones in our yard now. I put them under the porch (where there is no snow to bury them). When a skull shows up, we may alert authorities.

Having no onions has put a bit of a crimp in my cooking. Never fear, dehydrated veggies to the rescue! Thankfully Lance is appreciative of most any meal I cook. Heck, I’ve never seen a man who loves leftovers so much. If he doesn’t like the dish the first go round, then Brewskie wins the jackpot. If even the dog doesn’t want it (i.e., turmeric infused couscous) then the neighboring pooches win the scavenger hunt.

No plans to go into town, yet. No mail delivery tomorrow either. Good thing there is snow to shovel and photograph. A few things I’m thankful for: our well stocked pantry, Netflix, blogging and my beau. I am blessed.
