Living In It
“It gets worse before it gets better…”
I googled that quote and found everything from lost love to acne problems… Nothing about home improvements ;-).
Since we’re not ‘flipping’ this house, the renovations aren’t as speedy as usual. When I say speedy, I mean as fast as Lance can knock it out. Heck, one year ago we lived in a cute little house on 2 acres that we (again with the ‘we’ that really means he) fixed up. A great deal showed up on my foreclosure search. It was a year ago Thanksgiving that we bought the big house in Vandiver, AL. Thats a whole lot of fixing up in the last 12 months! (Thank You Lord that the previous 2 sold relatively quickly).
By now I’m rather use to living in run down (aka crappy) houses while Lance works his magic. It’s a little more exciting knowing we get to keep this one (well, that’s the plan anyway. God may have other things in the works for us).
Since our goal is to be off the grid, the current aim is to switch from electric appliances to propane. Nevermind that the hot water heater works great or that a new electric washer/dryer was purchased before we moved in..
Our neighbor, Merle, is a plumber. He spent the afternoon installing a propane propelled hot water heater (the device on the wall next to the oven). The header photo is AFTER he cleaned up his stuff.
We ordered the countertops yesterday (Lance is adding another eat-at-island for us, HOORAY). We’ve got more cabinets for the kitchen in the barn, plus a new sink and faucet. There will be a new floor by Spring too, I’m told.
Believe it or not, I do try to keep the place clean. The teeny tiny kitchen actually doesn’t look 1/2 bad (but thankfully the icky stuff on the walls and the green counters and stainless sink are going, going, soon).
Not a lengthy or informative blog, just wanted you to see it ‘in process’. Everytime you see a “Flip This House” on TV, ask yourself, how many professionals were hired (ok, ok, we are going to pay Merle, and Kirk doesn’t work ‘free’) but still… And do any of the homeowners live in the house while all this is going on? I think not.
Another interesting aspect is that our last house was 3300 sq ft, this one is 760. We give new meaning to the term ‘downsize’.
