Sunny Sunday

It was a gorgeous, sunny, snow-filled Sunday here in northern Idaho. I often speak of missing the sunshine.

In all fairness, it is often sunny here. Unfortunately, with the mountains, tall pines and short days of winter, it’s much more of a challenge to capture the rays on my face. Today I went looking for the warmth of the sun, and found it.

When I was younger, I use to lay in the sun for hours (and hours). As I grew older (and busier), I tried to absorb its warmth at every opportunity. I’d often volunteer for any outside work, in an attempt to become energized by solar power. Whether it’s mowing the yard, blowing leaves, washing the cars, or just hanging clothes on the line, it doesn’t matter. I just love being outside and bathing in the bright light.

There has been much research linking mood with vitamin D and sunshine. I believe it! Even more so, now. I was feeling a little ‘blue’ today for no apparent reason, so I went searching for some fingers from the god, Ra. We don’t get many minutes of direct rays where our cabin sets. We’re nestled slightly in a valley on a hillside, surrounded by very tall trees. I set out to find a clearing with direct access to Mr. Sun.

On Sundays, Brewskie is usually scarce. I think he gets to ride shotgun with his owner. Never fear, I found 2 new walking companions. I don’t know their names yet. One had more gray hairs than me and the other was certainly fluffier. We got along well. They didn’t maul me, chew on my boots, or lick my face when I sat on a stump to bathe in the sun. We proceeded to lay the first tracks on some freshly laid snow, down a dead-end road. There is something rather satisfying about an untraveled, snow-covered road. There is also something quite comforting about following those same tracks back home.

The dogs grew weary of my constant stopping for ultraviolet radiation. They high-tailed it back home. I found a clearing near a cabin at the end of the road. I made a snow pillow to prop up my head and I proceeded to soak up some serious rays. It was quite therapeutic. If the owners of the cabin decided to come home, I would’ve been quite a sight. What a way to meet your neighbors, eh?

Yesterday brought me fresh snow to create Mr. Albino Potato Head (no, he didn’t lose an arm. That’s his cig).

Today marks 2 weeks of project ‘wheels on the driveway’. I wonder why Lance hasn’t gone bonkers. I at least leave the perimeter. Maybe he’s just saner than most. The list of food items we’ve run out of continues to grow. It’s not a problem, yet. We’ve got coffee, milk and much to make a meal with. I do find myself fantasizing about lettuce and cucumbers. But I’m often amazed at how little desire I have to actually go somewhere to get said produce. I do have a greater appreciation for anything leafy, green and every direct ray of sunshine I can absorb!
