Valentines Day: Bah Humbug!

Why does one who ran away to Idaho to live out her fairytale with her prince charming, find Valentines so distasteful? I’m glad you asked.

The single people feel depressed. The couples feel obligated to DO, BUY, SHOW their love on this day. My son signed his email to me today- “Happy Consumerism Couples Day”. It’s all a crock of crud, if you ask me.

Romance is dead- it was acquired in a hostile take over by Hallmark and Disney, homogenized and sold off piece by piece.

I view it as a day to remind the lazy lover to go buy his/her love something that proves to the world how great their love is. Love should be shown each and every day, in big and small ways. More importantly, love should be SEEN everyday.

Part of the reason that men seem so much less loving than women is that men’s behavior is measured with a feminine ruler.

I’m not here to preach or give advice, but I can point out a few things I think I do right. I realize Lance adores me by all the things he does for me each and everyday (and night ;-)). Why, just this morning, he unclogged the toilet for me, washed all the dirty dishes in the sink and had the leftovers reheated by the time I returned from my hike. He gives me more back rubs than I deserve, pays the bills, does the taxes, manages our investments, sweeps the floor, fixes things, cooks dinner, kisses me for no apparent reason. I could go on and on… my point is- he doesn’t have to waste OUR money on roses or a fancy dinner out. It means more to me to see that twinkle in his eye when he bends down to kiss me [insert- awwws, here].

Maybe there is so much hype; good, bad and sad, about this day because we all need love. I will cease my rantings and disdain for the day and use it as a REreminder to count my blessings and love thems that love me.

A baby is born with a need to be loved and never outgrows it.

So, single friends, count up all the people who love YOU! Couples, save your money and relationship; show and SEE the love everyday in big and small ways. Okay, so it seems I couldn’t resist the urge to be a little preachy.

A word to 2 of my loves: Char, try something new. Perhaps a new brew is waiting for yew. KPA, cook your hubby heart-shaped bacon in the middle of the week, too!

Yeah, my 2 aren’t babies anymore, but they haven’t outgrown their need for love.
